- On or around Tue, 16 Apr 96, Joseph Waldvogel is alledged to have
- muttered something along the lines of -
-
- JW> Yet another MUI hater, for no good reson.
-
- No good reason IN YOUR OPINION, but not in the opinion of many others.
-
- Look, he gave several reasons, yet you chose to simply ignore them rather
- than counter them. Hmmm.
-
- JW> If MUI is such a memory HOG, then how
- JW> come MUI can run on a 2 meg Amiga with INET-225 and a Web Browser, or FTP or IRC
- JW> program at the same time?
-
- Only just, though.
-
- Face it, MUI uses up 300k to 450k of RAM just for its own libraries and
- gadgets - over 25% of the available RAM on a base A1200 - hardly what you
- could call 'efficient' for what is purely a GUI.
-
- (Or, to put it another way, MUI takes more to simply render a GUI than an
- FTP program or a web browser!! How much more reason do you need to
- understand why so many people dislike the gratuitous use of MUI?)
-
- JW> The days of 512K 68000 Amiga's are long gone.
-
- Indeed. But that is no reason to rely upon a bloated GUI that is SLOW and
- MEMORY-HUNGRY on the standard Amiga ("Meg RAM '020).
-
- JW> MUI is quite fast on my 030/50Mzh system, doesn't use that much ram at all, I
-
- Your system is fast by comparison to the STANDARD Amiga (and compared to the
- next version, too), so of course it should be fast (although I find it is
- still slow on my A4000/40, I'm afraid - an unacceptible delay before
- redrawing when simply resizing a window, for example).
-
- You might call 300k toi 450k or RAM 'not much', but I would hardly call it
- 'not much' personally, not for a bloody GUI.
-
- JW> use quite a few MUI programs, and many at once, Multi programs running at once
- JW> use even LESS memory then a non MUI program!!!
-
- Hmmmm. Not really. Besides, you still have the 300k to 450k MUI overhead
- to take into account (on 3 progs, that is STILL over 100k EACH in effect...)
-
-
- JW> For what Miami needs MUI for to configure the software, it's just fine. Using
- JW> some other GUI is not going to Make the program All that faster on SLOW Amiga's!
-
- Probably not, but it does mean that people will not be FORCED to install the
- bloated MUI on their machines just to use Miami. If it is just for such a
- small part of the program, then why inflict MUIupon us in the first place?
- No reason at all.
-
- JW> All I can say is, wait untel it's Released and try it yourself. I mean if you
- JW> get this BAD impressions on MUI programs because your using beta versions, what
- JW> can you expect.
-
- Right. That explains it, then. MUI prefs 3.2 must be a 'beta' program,
- then. Thanks for clearing this up. Erm, when is the non-beta of MUI
- coming out, then?
-
-
- JW> Ya, you just hate mui because it's mui, no other reson other then it's mui.
-
- Bollocks. Whenever someone posts a complaint against MUI, the 'MUI-lovers'
- start flaming 'you only hate MUI because it is MUI' and then totally ignore
- or deny the complaints. Try reading what others write, then you might
- understand why many dislike MUI - you may not agree with them, but at least
- you will be able to understand and even counter their arguments with more
- than just "you hate it just because it is MUI".
-
- JW> Other GUI's use just as much memory and can be just as slow on a slow amiga and
- JW> other amiga gui's that can do most of what mui can do.
-
- Again, Bollock. So, BGUI, Triton etc all use 300k to 450k of RAM, eh? I
- would suggest that you have them configured totally wrongly!!!
-
-
- Ho hum,
-
- Keith.
- (Who really likes the CONCEPT behind MUI but finds the IMPLEMENTATION to be
- big and slow).
